Abstract
This research explores the cultural identity of Vietnamese narratives by examining journey motifs to the upper and lower worlds in folk narratives and fantasy short stories. It uses sociohistorical approaches to analyze archetypal journeys in early collections written in Han characters and in *Excursive Notes on Weird Stories* by Nguyen Du. The study reveals how these motifs reflect the history, culture, and religious conflicts (Taoism vs. Confucianism) of medieval Vietnam, particularly the hidden political discourses within Confucian writings.
