How does the circular economy achieve social change? Assessment in terms of sustainable development goals

This study investigates the link between circular economy (CE) strategies and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A CE-SDGs framework is proposed, testing the impact of CE activities (involvement, professional profiles/training, sustainability information) on SDG achievement (people- and planet-oriented activities). Using a structural equation model with partial least squares on Social Economy enterprises in Extremadura, Spain, the study finds that CE involvement positively impacts professional profiles/training and sustainability information, which in turn positively affect people-oriented SDGs. However, the relationship with planet-oriented SDGs is less clear. Barriers and incentives significantly influence overall SDG achievement. The study contributes an initial framework for understanding the CE-SDG link in Social Economy enterprises, highlighting the importance of training and information transparency.
