Abstract
Caldera-forming eruptions of silicic volcanic systems are among the most devastating events on Earth. The Kameni Volcano in Santorini enables reconstruction of a recharging multi-cyclic caldera's eruptive evolution. Combining seismic reflection data with cored lithologies, the study reveals a submarine explosive eruption producing up to 3.1 km³ of pumice and ash, linked to a 726 CE eruption (VEI 5). This exceeds previous worst-case scenarios and implies elevated hazard potential for the eastern Mediterranean and other similar calderas.
