Abstract
Industry 4.0 envisions the integration of information, objects, and people in cyber-physical systems to transform factories into intelligent environments. Although this transition is ongoing, Industry 5.0 has emerged to re-center the human in production systems, with human-robot collaboration (HRC) as a core paradigm. This paper reviews the conceptual evolution and implementation of Industry 4.0 in construction via a literature review and bibliometric analysis, clarifies the scope of Industry 5.0, and assesses its momentum through comparisons with Industry 4.0/Construction 4.0 literature. It further evaluates the feasibility of evolving toward Construction 5.0 by examining HRC’s prospects and distinct challenges in construction, proposing new directions. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first work to consider ‘Construction 5.0’ and the first bibliometric analysis comparing Industry 4.0, Construction 4.0, and Industry 5.0 literature.
