Abstract
This article surveys the translation and reception of Henry David Thoreau's *Walden* in China over the past century. It examines the evolving interpretations of Thoreau by Chinese translators, literary scholars, and writers, revealing a shift from viewing him as a figure endorsing traditional Chinese values to recognizing him as a multifaceted figure who has significantly influenced Chinese eco-writers. The study employs a descriptive and diachronic approach, analyzing various Chinese translations of *Walden* and related scholarship to trace the changing nature of Chinese engagement with Thoreau's work.
