Abstract

This qualitative study explores community-based suicide prevention in rural Australia. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 37 self-identified experts (community services, program providers, researchers, and policy developers) revealed three key themes: community-led initiatives, meeting community needs, and programs to improve health and reduce suicidality. Effective prevention requires community engagement, partnerships, utilizing available resources and social capital, and co-creating interventions that reflect diverse community characteristics. The study highlights community-based suicide prevention as a social innovation approach, empowering communities to implement and adapt programs to their specific needs.
