Abstract
This paper applies Habitus-Field theory, Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA), and close reading to study the extinct Tocharian civilization through its extinct language. Analyzing a large corpus of Tocharian text fragments (5th-10th century CE), the study distinguishes between political, spiritual, and economic elites based on Buddhist moral principles, gift-giving practices, control over the caravan trade, and the act of writing itself.
