Abstract

This paper investigates the escalation of local conflicts into broader Cold War-like divisions using a signed network game model. The author challenges the notion that increasing trade prevents conflict, demonstrating that a single local conflict, coupled with a specific strategy (a "friend of my enemy is my enemy" policy) by one involved country, can lead to a globally dichotomized world. The model reveals conditions for stable division and explores the implications of neutral states and varied preference structures.
