ERA5: The new champion of wind power modelling?

J. Olauson

Discover how Jon Olauson explored the battle of reanalyses with wind power modeling, revealing that ERA5 significantly outperforms MERRA-2 by delivering higher correlations and lower errors. Uncover a new metric for quantifying wind farm system size and dispersion.

Abstract
This paper compares the performance of ERA5 and MERRA-2 reanalyses in wind power modeling. ERA5 outperforms MERRA-2 in all aspects analyzed, showing higher correlations, lower errors (approximately 20% lower on average), and distributions more similar to measurements. The uncertainty related to long-term correction is also 20% lower for ERA5, with one year of ERA5-corrected data proving more accurate than two years of MERRA-2-corrected data. A new metric for quantifying wind farm system size and dispersion is also proposed.
