Abstract
Emerging infectious diseases pose a growing threat due to factors like increased human-animal contact and globalization. Blood transfusions, while life-saving, can transmit these pathogens. This review examines the Mirasol PRT system, a photochemical method using riboflavin and UV light, as a proactive pathogen reduction technology. The effectiveness of Mirasol against emerging threats such as Ebola, SARS-CoV-2, hepatitis E, and mpox is evaluated, highlighting its potential to improve blood safety and pandemic preparedness.
