Embodiment in episodic memory through premotor-hippocampal coupling

N. H. Meyer, B. Gauthier, et al.

Using real-time sensorimotor stimulation, immersive virtual reality, and fMRI, the authors manipulated the sense of agency (SoA) and found stronger hippocampal reinstatement for scenes encoded under preserved SoA, mirroring recognition performance; premotor-hippocampal coupling linked bodily self-signals at encoding to episodic retrieval, and a severe amnesic patient lacked this SoA dependence.
