Abstract
The energy transition necessitates rapid renewable energy (RE) and electric vehicle (EV) deployment. EV batteries offer potential for short-term grid services, complementing RE generation. This study quantifies the global EV battery capacity available for grid storage using an integrated model encompassing EV battery deployment, degradation, and market participation. Results indicate a technical capacity of 32–62 terawatt-hours by 2050, with low participation rates (12%–43%) sufficient for global short-term grid storage demand. Short-term grid storage demand could be met as early as 2030 in most regions.
