Abstract
This study investigates the impact of renewable energy transition (RET), patents (as a proxy for innovation), and economic growth on CO2 emissions in 25 Western European countries from 1995 to 2020. Using cross-sectional dependence techniques, the findings reveal an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) with a turning point at a GDP per capita of $50,287. RET significantly reduces CO2 emissions in both the short and long run, while patents exhibit a negative long-run effect but no short-run impact. The study suggests policies promoting RET and innovation to enhance environmental sustainability.
