Distorted learning from local metacognition supports transdiagnostic underconfidence

Research conducted by Sucharit Katyal, Quentin JM Huys, Raymond J. Dolan, and Stephen M. Fleming finds that people with anxiety and depression exhibit persistent underconfidence. In two large samples (N = 230 and N = 278) they measured 'local' confidence in single task instances and 'global' confidence as longer-run self-performance estimates while manipulating feedback. Global confidence tracked local confidence and feedback valence, but those with higher anxious-depression symptoms showed reduced sensitivity to high-confidence moments, explaining persistent underconfidence.
