Displacement or Complementarity? The Labor Market Impact of Generative AI

Generative AI is poised to reshape the labor market, with effects that vary across occupations. This study finds that generative AI reduces labor demand and skill requirements in structured cognitive-task jobs while boosting demand and skill complexity in roles involving human–AI collaboration, highlighting the need for targeted policies to ease displacement and support upskilling.
