Disentangling metabolic and neurovascular timescales supporting cognitive processes

Using time-resolved functional magnetic resonance spectroscopy and MRI, this study traces how the balance between neural excitation and inhibition (Glx and GABA+) and dynamic functional connectivity co-evolve during working memory, showing that higher cognitive load drives networks into more specialized, longer-lasting configurations and an excitation-biased imbalance linked to individual performance.
