Differential increase of hippocampal subfield volume after socio-affective mental training relates to reductions in diurnal cortisol

The hippocampus modulates the HPA-axis and stress; this study tested whether three 3-month mental training modules—attention-based mindfulness, socio-affective (compassion), and socio-cognitive—affect hippocampal subfield volume and intrinsic functional connectivity in 332 healthy adults and linked these changes to diurnal and chronic cortisol. Compassion-based training increased bilateral CA1-3 volume and connectivity and was associated with reduced cortisol.
