Abstract

This study investigates the determinants of profitability for Sheltered Workshops (SWs) in Spain, analyzing 1133 entities from 2010 to 2020. Using panel data models and data envelopment analysis (DEA), the study finds that operational efficiency positively impacts profitability, outweighing the negative effect of social efficiency. SWs successfully balanced social and economic goals. The financial and COVID-19 crises negatively impacted profitability, but efficiency remained positively associated with profitability during the COVID-19 crisis. Size, low risk, and leverage positively impacted performance, while age, liquidity, and tangibility negatively impacted it. Legal status (for-profit vs. non-profit) showed no significant difference in these effects.
