Abstract
This article analyzes the impact of opting-out mechanisms on cooperation in repeated public goods games. It challenges the conventional focus on opting out against defectors, demonstrating that other mechanisms are more effective in promoting cooperation. The study finds that defectors' intolerance of cooperators, leading to the disbanding of heterogeneous groups, significantly enhances cooperation, particularly when homogeneous groups remain together for a sufficient number of rounds.
