Abstract

This article explores the challenges of quantifying the total impact of regulations in the United States. It catalogs prominent methods used to count regulations and measure their cumulative economic impact, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. The author argues that current methods are flawed and proposes alternative approaches, including utilizing large language models and detailed analysis of Paperwork Reduction Act data, as well as more qualitative work focusing on the consequences of regulation on individuals, firms, and industries.
