Conventionality and context jointly modulate the effect of inhibitory control on L2 metaphor comprehension

Z. Yao, X. Huang, et al.

This intriguing research by Zhao Yao, Xinle Huang, Yu Chai, and Jifei Zhang explores the dynamic relationship between inhibitory control and second language metaphor comprehension. The study reveals that the understanding of metaphors is not just a cognitive process but is influenced by how conventional or novel the metaphor is, as well as the context in which it's presented. Discover how these factors interplay in L2 learning!

Abstract
This study investigates how inhibitory control affects second language (L2) metaphor comprehension, considering the roles of metaphor conventionality (conventional vs. novel) and context (supportive vs. literal). Using a modified flanker task and semantic judgment tasks, the study compared high inhibitory control (HIC) and low inhibitory control (LIC) groups. Results show that inhibitory control's influence is modulated by both conventionality and context, suggesting a flexible and dynamic role in L2 metaphor comprehension.
