Containing misinformation: Modeling spatial games of fake news

A mathematical model treating news sharing as a coordination game shows how network structure enables fake-news echo chambers and more than doubles fake news’ resistance to distributed sanctioning. Simulations on lattices, small-worlds and a Twitter dataset demonstrate that strategically placed sanctioners can contain misinformation; analytic conditions for effective peer sanctioning are derived.
