Abstract
This study examines the relationship between careless online behavior, personality traits, and the ability to detect fake news. Poorer discernment of fake news headlines was linked to increased careless online behavior (online disinhibition, risky online behavior, engagement with strangers, and less suspicion of others), lower Conscientiousness, Openness, and Honesty-Humility, and higher dark triad traits. The implications for reducing susceptibility to misinformation are discussed.
