S. P. Ghimire

This insightful study by Surendra Prasad Ghimire delves into Narendra Modi's speech at Lumbini, where he skillfully utilized rhetorical techniques to strengthen ties between Nepal and India. Abstract
This article analyzes the rhetorical devices and logical arguments used in Narendra Modi's speech at Lumbini, Nepal, during the 2566th birth ceremony of Lord Buddha. Using Aristotle's concept of rhetoric and Toulmin's model of argumentation, the study finds that Modi employed various rhetorical techniques to foster religious and cultural ties between Nepal and India. However, the analysis also reveals an exclusionary aspect, as Modi's rhetoric predominantly focused on Hinduism and Buddhism, neglecting other religious and cultural groups present in both countries. The seemingly religious rhetoric, the study argues, served a political purpose: promoting relations between Nepal and India by advancing cultural nationalism and emphasizing the dominance of Hinduism and Buddhism.
