Concept and location neurons in the human brain provide the 'what' and 'where' in memory formation

Our brains bind the 'who/what' and 'where' of experiences into episodic memories. By recording single-neuron activity in the human medial temporal lobe during item-location encoding, this study identifies two specialized neuron groups—concept cells in hippocampus/amygdala/entorhinal cortex and parahippocampal location-selective neurons—whose heightened firing predicts successful memory formation.
