Cognitive Reappraisal is More Effective for Regulating Emotions than Moods

Cognitive reappraisal targets what emotions are about, but moods often lack intentionality — so is reappraisal less effective for moods? Two studies (Study 1, N=184, daily life; Study 2, N=65, controlled experiment) conducted by Samuel Meyers, Danfei Hu, and Maya Tamir found reappraisal reduced emotions more than moods, while distraction did not show this difference.
