Chronic stress is a major risk factor for mood disorders. This study uses circuit-specific gene editing to demonstrate that the transcription factor ΔFosB regulates the activity of ventral hippocampus glutamatergic neurons, influencing behavioral responses to stress. The findings establish molecular, cellular, and circuit-level mechanisms for depression- and anxiety-like behaviors and identify potential therapeutic targets for depression.
