Abstract

This study uses high-resolution ocean reanalysis to assess bottom marine heatwaves (BMHWs) along North America's continental shelves. BMHW intensity and duration vary with depth, sometimes exceeding surface MHWs in intensity and duration. While often co-occurring with surface MHWs, BMHWs can exist independently, especially in deeper regions. The study highlights the importance of subsurface ocean monitoring.
