Abstract
This research paper investigates the origins of synthetic lead white in East and West Eurasia. Analysis of white cosmetic residues from the Liangdaicun site in northern China (8th century BCE) reveals the earliest known synthesized lead white, produced via a precipitation method, differing from the corrosion method used in ancient Greece. This suggests independent development of lead white synthesis in East and West Eurasia during the first millennium BCE. The mass production of synthetic lead white fueled a cosmetic revolution in both regions, highlighting the role of beauty in stimulating chemical advancements.
