Abstract
This study assessed auditory discrimination in 366 children (aged 6-9 years) with normal peripheral hearing: 220 with auditory processing disorder (APD) and 146 typically developing (TD) children. Speech discrimination was tested using a phoneme discrimination test (PDT), and pure-tone discrimination using a frequency pattern test (FPT). Children with APD performed significantly worse on both tests than TD children. Even 9-year-old APD children performed worse than 6-year-old TD children, suggesting that auditory discrimination continues to develop beyond the acquisition of phonemes and that PDT and FPT should be included in APD diagnostic assessments for developing individualized therapeutic programs.
