Abstract
This study investigates the association between early school enjoyment and later educational achievement using data from a UK cohort. It examines the association's strength, the role of family background factors, and whether sex differences in school enjoyment explain sex differences in achievement. Results indicate a strong positive association between school enjoyment at age 6 and academic achievement at age 16, even after adjusting for socioeconomic background and cognitive ability. School enjoyment appears to be a potentially modifiable factor for improving educational outcomes.
