Abstract
Road traffic accidents are a global public health problem with major social and economic impacts. AESLEME (Association for the Study of Spinal Cord Injuries) has delivered school-based presentations combining road safety education with personal testimonies from people affected by spinal cord injuries. STUDY DESIGN: Pre- and post- quasi-experimental study. OBJECTIVE: To assess the increase in road safety knowledge following a school-based campaign. METHODS: Two identical multiple-choice tests (12 questions; one correct option among four) were administered to 8106 students aged 12–14 years: one before the presentation and one one month later. RESULTS: Correct answers increased significantly one month after the presentation (p < 0.01), corresponding to a national 61% increase in the odds of correct responses; regional increases ranged from 8% to 278%. CONCLUSIONS: Among more than 8000 students, AESLEME’s educational presentations significantly improved road safety knowledge nationally and across multiple regions.
