Abstract

This research investigates the global CO₂ sequestration potential of afforesting arid land using renewable energy (RE)-powered desalination plants for irrigation between 2030 and 2100. Results indicate a cumulative CO₂ sequestration potential of 730 GtCO₂. The average cost is estimated at €457 per tCO₂ in 2030, decreasing to €100 per tCO₂ by 2100 due to decreasing RE costs and increasing sequestration rates. Coastal regions with abundant solar resources show the lowest costs, as low as €50 per tCO₂ by 2070. The study suggests a significant role for this afforestation method in climate change mitigation.
