A synergistic mindsets intervention protects adolescents from stress

D. S. Yeager, C. J. Bryan, et al.

Discover how a scalable 'synergistic mindsets' intervention can transform adolescents' stress responses! Conducted by a team of experts including David S. Yeager and Christopher J. Bryan, this research reveals how enhancing both growth mindsets and stress perspectives can lead to improved psychological well-being and academic success during challenging times like the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Abstract
This study demonstrates that a short, scalable 'synergistic mindsets' intervention effectively improves adolescents' stress responses. The intervention, a self-administered online module, targets growth mindsets (intelligence is developed) and stress-can-be-enhancing mindsets (physiological stress response fuels optimal performance). Six double-blind, randomized controlled experiments (n=4,686) showed the intervention improved stress-related cognitions, cardiovascular reactivity, daily cortisol levels, psychological well-being, academic success, and anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Heterogeneity analyses showed benefits depended on addressing both mindsets synergistically. This low-cost intervention offers potential for national-scale implementation.
