Abstract
While the number of women in Australian STEM is growing, underrepresentation persists. This qualitative study, using 25 interviews with female STEM professionals in regional Australia, explores their diverse experiences. Despite varied journeys, common themes emerged: societal prejudices, resilience, determination, and strong early STEM interest. Opinions were divided on the impact of positive discrimination. The authors argue these women 'survived' due to personal attributes despite structural barriers.
