Abstract
The shipping industry is increasingly aware of decarbonization challenges, with green fuels like hydrogen, ammonia, and methanol gaining attention. However, the pathway from renewable energy to ship fuel needs more focus. This paper reviews green fuel production methods (electrolysis of seawater for hydrogen, Haber-Bosch process for ammonia using green hydrogen, and CO2 conversion for methanol using green power) and analyzes their potential for shipping. While promising, these fuels currently have higher costs than conventional fuel. The authors recommend improving green power and electrochemical fuel production technologies to reduce costs and exploring new technologies to achieve carbon reduction in shipping.
