Abstract

Phytophthora root and stem rot, caused by *P. sojae*, is a devastating soybean disease. This study identifies *Rps11*, a 27.7-kb nucleotide-binding site-leucine-rich repeat (NLR) gene, as a source of broad-spectrum resistance. *Rps11* resides within a cluster of large NLR genes, generated through unequal recombination, leading to promoter fusion and LRR expansion. Significant structural diversity and copy number variation (5–23 copies) of this gene cluster are observed across soybean varieties, highlighting the dynamic evolution of NLR genes.
