The University of British Columbia Postdoctoral Research Fellow Program is a prestigious opportunity for researchers to conduct impactful global health initiatives. The program focuses on risk-based differentiated care to prevent pediatric mortality and morbidity, enabled through digital health technologies in Africa (Kenya, Uganda, and more).

The Trainee will work on programs with over 15+ years of implementation research, leveraging evidence-based technologies to support frontline healthcare workers in resource-limited settings. These programs include Smart Discharges Child, Smart Discharges Mom & Baby, and Smart Triage, aimed at diagnosing, triaging, and discharging children with serious infections and other co-morbidities.

βœ… Program Requirements

Candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.
  • High personal motivation, self-management, and detail orientation; ability to meet deadlines.
  • High degree of comfort with change and adaptability to evolving projects in large, complex health systems and technologies.
  • Training in a relevant discipline (e.g., Epidemiology, Statistics, Biostatistics, Public Health, or related fields with a strong foundation in statistics).
  • Minimum of two years of related experience.
  • Skills in data management and programming using statistical packages (e.g., SAS, SQL, STATA, R).
  • Knowledge of research processes, systematic reviews, and syntheses.
  • Education/training and experience in quantitative research methods and multivariate statistical analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills, including strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills.
  • High-level conceptual, analytical, and critical appraisal skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative and willingness to work closely with members of a research team.
  • At least two years’ experience living/working in low-resource settings.
  • Strong relational skills to work across sectors (hospitals, primary care, and community).
  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve technical and methodological issues.
  • High level of professionalism, judgment, ethical conduct, discretion, and diplomacy.
