📖 About the Program

The John R. Lewis Social Justice Policy Fellowship is a program by the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) designed to provide young Black professionals the opportunity to work in Congress and with the Foundation to address social justice and racial equity issues affecting Black communities.

This fellowship is distinguished by two six-month rotations:

  • Fellows will be placed in the U.S. Congress with Congressional Black Caucus members.
  • Fellows will also work with the CBCF’s Center for Policy Analysis and Research (CPAR) for a total of 12 months.

💼 Benefits

  • Salary: Fellows will receive a non-negotiable salary of $70,000 for the duration of the program.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship or a permit to work in the U.S. for the duration of the program (September 2026 through September 2027).
  • A graduate or professional degree completed prior to the fellowship start date.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice through public policy, professional experience, or community-related activism aimed at improving living conditions for Black communities.
  • At least three (3) years of community activism or grassroots organizing in a leadership position.
  • Familiarity with the federal legislative process, the U.S. Congress, the Congressional Black Caucus and its members, and related policy.
  • Superior analytical skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills.

  1. Resume: A 2-page resume listing extracurricular activities, honors, employment, community service, and special skills.
  2. Cover Letter:
    • Explain your interest in the fellowship.
    • Discuss how your academic and professional background prepares you for the fellowship.
    • Describe how the fellowship aligns with your career goals.
    • Reflect on how your values, experiences, or commitments connect to the legacy of Congressman John Lewis (2-page limit).
  3. Two (2) Letters of Recommendation: Must be submitted electronically (hard copies will not be accepted).
  4. Essay Question Response: Address the essay question provided in the application.
