UAPS and AIR P3 Africa Fellowship (Cohort 3) for African Doctoral Researchers

The UAPS/AIR P3 Africa Fellowship is a joint initiative by the Union for African Population Studies (UAPS) and the American Institutes for Research (AIR). This program supports early- and mid-career African researchers through a combination of research grants, intensive training, and expert mentorship. The fellowship equips participants to produce high-impact population and health research on the African continent.

  • Policy translation and evidence briefs

3. Mentorship

• Duration: 12 months
• Details:
  • Fellows are paired with mentors based on theme, method, and geography
  • Introductory meeting within the first 2 weeks
  • Minimum monthly check-ins throughout the year
  • Feedback on proposal, data tools, draft findings, and final report
  • Guidance on writing, journal selection, and career planning
  • Both fellow and mentor submit progress notes at mid-term and end

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be a UAPS dues-paying Student Member in good standing.
• Be a citizen of an African country, currently based and working in Africa.
• Hold a Master’s degree in one of the following fields:
  • Demography
  • Public health
  • Sociology
  • Economics
  • Epidemiology
  • Statistics
  • Or a related field
• Be currently enrolled in a doctoral program with coursework completed.
• Note: Previous AfRes-Data or UAPS/AIR P3 fellows are not eligible.
