📖 About the Reginald F. Lewis Fellowship Program

The fellowship requires the Lewis Fellow to:

  • Prepare at least one major article for publication.
  • Audit courses and attend workshops at Harvard Law School.
  • Follow a schedule of research and work agreed upon with the Lewis Committee.

The fellowship term runs from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027, and the Lewis Fellow is expected to be in residence at Harvard Law School during the academic year.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

This fellowship is open to recent law graduates who have demonstrated a strong interest in legal scholarship and are preparing for a career in law teaching.

Additional Requirements:

  1. A comprehensive résumé or curriculum vitae.
  2. A detailed (four pages maximum) description of the research and writing project to be undertaken with a view to publication during the fellowship.
  3. A statement of the applicant’s interest in law teaching and legal scholarship (four pages maximum), including a description of the fields in which the applicant expects to teach and pursue scholarship.
  4. Copies of all transcripts.
  5. Two letters of reference addressing the applicant’s potential for success as a legal scholar and law teacher.

Basic Qualifications:

  • J.D., LL.M., or S.J.D. degree at the time of application.

  1. Filling Out the Application: Ensure all required fields are completed.
  2. Requesting Recommendations:
    • Provide the name and contact information for your recommenders.
    • Click “Send recommendation request” under each recommender’s entry to notify them via email.
    • Inform your recommenders that they will receive an email from carat.app@fas.harvard.edu with the subject line: "CARAT application recommendation request for YOUR NAME."
  3. Uploading Documents:
    • All documents must be submitted in PDF format.
    • No supplementary materials will be accepted.
  4. Submitting Your Application:
    • For Harvard applicants, enter your HUID and click “Submit.”
    • For non-Harvard applicants, enter your new ID string and click “Submit.” Late applications will not be accepted.

The Reginald F. Lewis Fellowship is made possible through a gift from Reginald F. Lewis, a graduate of Harvard Law School (1968), and his wife, Loida Nicolas-Lewis. Shortly before his death in 1993, Mr. Lewis gave the largest grant at the time in the Law School’s history, leading to the renaming of Harvard Law School’s International Law Center in his honor.

Mr. Lewis was the founding CEO of TLC Beatrice Foods International and the author of the book Why Should White Guys Have All the Fun?.
