📖 About the Program

The Council on African Studies at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University invites applications for its Visiting African Scholars Fellowship Program. This opportunity is open to academics holding full-time positions in African universities and aims to promote Africa-focused research and teaching both at Yale and on the continent.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teach one course on an African topic in any humanities or social science field during the fall or spring semester.
  • Develop a research project.
  • Deliver a public lecture to the Yale community.
  • Participate in the intellectual and social life of the Council and the MacMillan Center.

The fellowship provides a generous stipend and research support, including access to Yale’s excellent library and other resources.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to academics with full-time positions in African universities.
  • Must hold an earned doctorate (or equivalent qualifications).
  • Fellows are required to be in full-time residence at Yale starting August 1, 2026.

📝 Application Process

Applicants must submit their application via Interfolio. The required documents include:

  1. Cover letter (including email and preferred Yale faculty collaborator).
  2. Current CV (with publications).
  3. 1000-word description of the proposed research project.
  4. Names and contact information for two references (letters required if shortlisted).
  5. Summary of the proposed course, including readings and assignments.
