Opportunity Overview

The Princeton Society of Fellows, an interdisciplinary group of scholars in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences, invites applications for its prestigious fellowship program. This opportunity is designed for early-career scholars who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, teaching experience, and potential contributions to an interdisciplinary academic community.

🏛️ About the Fellowship

The Princeton Society of Fellows annually awards fellowships to scholars in the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. Fellows are appointed as Associate Research Scholars in the Council of the Humanities for a three-year term. During this time, fellows:

  • Pursue independent research.
  • Attend weekly seminars.
  • Teach undergraduate courses in their respective academic departments.

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • First and Second Years: Teach one undergraduate course per semester.
  • Third Year: Teach one course in either semester.
  • Fellows will also carry the secondary rank of Lecturer when teaching.

The Society seeks a diverse and international pool of applicants.

📜 Fellowship Categories

1. Two or Three Open Fellowships in the Humanities and Social Sciences

  • Open to applicants in all disciplines represented in the Society.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Research and teaching (one course per semester in the first two years, one course in the third year).
    • Participation in team-taught or self-designed courses in the host department or interdisciplinary programs.
    • Advising in their specialty or related research areas.

2. One Fellowship in Humanistic Studies

  • Supported jointly by the Council of the Humanities and the Society of Fellows.
  • Open to candidates in humanities disciplines represented in the Society.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Research and teaching (one course per semester in the first two years, one course in the third year).
    • Co-teaching in the Humanities Sequence during the first two years.
    • Contributing to community-building activities in the Program in Humanistic Studies, such as workshops, field trips, and undergraduate society events.

3. One Fellowship in East Asian Studies

  • Supported jointly by the Department of East Asian Studies and the Society of Fellows.
  • Open to candidates whose research focuses on East Asia.
  • Responsibilities include:
    • Research and teaching (one course per semester in the first two years, one course in the third year).
    • Co-teaching courses such as:
      • East Asian Humanities I: The Classical Foundations (antiquity to ca. 1600)
      • East Asian Humanities II: Traditions and Transformations (modern period to present)
      • East Asia to 1600 or East Asia since 1800.
    • Advising in their specialty or related research areas.

💰 Benefits

  • Salary Range: $101,000 - $105,000 per year.
  • Research Support: $5,000 research account.
  • Access to university grants.
  • Shared office space, computer, and other resources.
  • Fellows are expected to be on campus during the academic year to fully participate in the intellectual life of the Society and the University.

🎓 Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. Degree Requirements:

  1. Applicants with a Ph.D.:

    • Must have received their degree between January 1, 2024, and the application deadline, August 5, 2025.
    • Priority is given to applicants with no more than one year of research-only funding post-Ph.D.
    • Must upload evidence of Ph.D. completion (e.g., Ph.D. certificate, official transcript, or degree confirmation letter).
  2. Applicants who are ABD (All But Dissertation):

    • Must fulfill all conditions for the Ph.D. degree, including defense and filing of the dissertation, by June 15, 2026.
    • Must have completed at least half of their dissertation at the time of application.
    • Must upload a letter from the Department Chair or Director of Graduate Studies confirming "progress to degree."

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants who have previously applied to the Princeton Society of Fellows are not eligible to apply again.
  • Candidates for/recipients of doctorates in Education (Ed.D. or Ph.D.), Jurisprudence, or DMA, and candidates for/recipients of Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University are not eligible.
  • Positions are subject to Princeton University's background check policy.
