✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Medium Grants Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. The building must be a Christian place of worship located in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, or the Channel Islands.
  2. The building must have been originally built as a place of worship more than 30 years ago.
  3. The building must be open for a minimum of six public services a year (preference is for more regular use).
  4. The building must be open to the public beyond worship for at least 100 days a year, or will be following the project’s completion.
  5. The proposed works must be for the place of worship itself or an extension to it (new builds or stand-alone structures are not funded, except in specific cases for Grade I or A listed buildings).
  6. The applicant must own the building or have the right to carry out the work.
  7. The project must:
    • Be for repairs costing between £1,000 and £80,000 (including VAT), or
    • Be for project development work.
  8. Repair projects must be led by a professionally qualified architect (listed on the Architects Register) or a chartered building surveyor (RICS or FRICS). For listed buildings, the professional must have conservation accreditation from a recognized body.
  9. All necessary permissions (e.g., Faculty Certificate, Archdeacon’s consent, local planning permission) must be in place and valid.
  10. At least two quotes must be in place for the work being carried out.
  11. At least 50% of the total project cost must already be raised.
  12. If the annual income of the place of worship exceeds £100,000, it must be registered with the Charity Commission, Charity Commission for Northern Ireland, or Scottish Charity Regulator (or evidence of registration in process must be provided).
  13. The place of worship must have a safeguarding policy in place.
  14. For small or independent denominations, the church must have charitable status.
