📖 About Max Planck Internship

The Max Planck Institutes for Informatics (Saarbruecken), Software Systems (Saarbruecken and Kaiserslautern), and Security and Privacy (Bochum) offer research internships in all areas of Computer Science.

An internship at a Max Planck Institute provides an opportunity to pursue world-class research in computer science. It is also an excellent way to explore research or new research areas for the first time.

  • Internship Availability: Open year-round (most interns prefer summer months).
  • Mentorship: Each intern works directly with an assigned faculty mentor at one of the participating institutes.
  • Projects: Tailored to the intern’s academic interests, maturity, and prior experience.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to exceptional Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral students worldwide with:
    • A basic background in Computer Science (approximately the first three years of a standard Computer Science Bachelor’s program by the start of the internship).
    • An interest in CS research.
  • Industry Applicants with a similar background and an interest in academic CS research may also apply.
  • Students seeking Bachelor’s or Master’s thesis projects are welcome. The internship project can be converted to a thesis if the student’s university allows.
  • Pre-doctoral students exploring computer science research prior to embarking on a research career are encouraged to apply.
  • Applicants with diverse academic backgrounds and interdisciplinary interests (e.g., intersecting social science, economics, law, humanities, etc.) are encouraged.
  • Applications from individuals belonging to underrepresented groups in CS or other STEM fields are particularly welcome.
  • Applicants are expected to have an excellent academic record, regardless of its length.

    • CV
    • Transcripts
    • Contact information for at least one reference.
    • Optional: Motivation letter and faculty preferences at participating institutes.
  • Note: References are not requested immediately in all cases. Please do not contact the team regarding reference requests.

2. Matching Process

  • Research groups at participating institutes will review your application.
  • You may be contacted for a phone interview during this period.

3. Notification

  • You will be notified of the outcome of your application via email.
  • If selected, you will be connected with your assigned faculty mentor to finalize the internship dates and project.
