📖 About Chevening LSE Fellowship

The Chevening LSE Fellowship is hosted by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO).

Programme Structure

  • Fellows will spend three, six, or nine months working on a defined research project at LSE.
  • Fellows will identify and secure an adviser and will be hosted in a department, institute, or centre at LSE aligned with their research interests.
  • During the fellowship, participants are expected to:
    • Work on their research and complete a paper to be presented at LSE.
    • Audit relevant lectures (subject to instructor approval).
    • Participate in seminars and discussion groups.
  • Applications are welcomed across all social science disciplines, with a focus on:
    • International relations
    • Public policy and administration
    • Public diplomacy
    • Social, economic, and environmental policy
    • Development studies
  • A research proposal is required as part of the application.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Chevening LSE Fellowship, applicants must:

  • Agree to adhere to all relevant guidelines and expectations for the programme.
  • Be a citizen of China, currently reside in the country, and intend to return to China after the fellowship.
  • Hold a postgraduate (PG) level qualification or equivalent professional training/experience in a relevant area at the time of application.
  • Have at least five years of significant professional experience or be a currently enrolled PhD candidate (PhD must not be with a UK/EU or USA university).
  • Not hold dual nationality where one nationality is British (exceptions apply as per Chevening Guidance for Applicants).
  • Not be an employee, former employee, or relative of an employee of His Majesty’s Government or related organisations within the last two years.

Additional Notes:

  • Applicants who have previously received financial benefit from an HMG-funded scholarship or fellowship are eligible to apply after a period of five years following the completion of their first award. They must demonstrate career progression since then.
  • Employees, former employees, or relatives of employees of Chevening Partner organisations are eligible to apply. However, if the employment occurred within the last two years, they cannot receive a Chevening Partner Award from the same organisation.

Definition of Relatives:

Relatives include parents, step-parents, siblings, step-siblings, children, step-children, spouse, civil partner, or unmarried partner (if the relationship has lasted at least two years).

Strong applicants are expected to have:

  • An excellent academic track record and a demonstrated interest in their chosen area of research.
  • Evidence of professional development and work-related experience, including:
    • Research output such as journal articles, policy papers, reports, or other publications.
  • Enthusiasm for engaging with LSE’s intellectual community and contributing to the academic activities of their host department.
