Opportunity Overview

The British Council UK 90th Anniversary Fellowship 2027 is a fully funded fellowship for international students. The program duration is 12 months, with participants spending the first 10 months at the University of Edinburgh and the remaining 2 months in their home countries in collaboration with the British Council.

📖 About the Fellowship

This fellowship is designed to support international researchers and foster knowledge exchange. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in research at the University of Edinburgh and contribute to their home countries upon completion of the program.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. Applications are warmly welcomed from ODA-recipient countries where the British Council operates.
  2. Applicants must have been awarded a doctorate at the time of application, typically within the last 7 years (i.e., graduated between 2019 and summer 2026).
    • Earlier graduates may be eligible if they have taken significant career breaks since completing their doctorate.
    • If the doctorate is not yet awarded, applicants must provide proof of successful viva examination and thesis corrections.
  3. Applicants should not have held a permanent position at a university or a previous fellowship at IASH.
    • Temporary, recurring, or short-term employment is acceptable.
    • Parental leave or other career breaks will not count towards the 7-year limit (details must be provided in the application).

📝 Application Process

Applicants are required to submit the following:

  1. Application form, CV, and research proposal.
  2. A cover letter outlining how the fellowship will support the British Council’s objectives for this program.
  3. Confidential references:
    • A minimum of two and a maximum of three references are required.
    • Referees should email their references directly to the Director at iash@ed.ac.uk by the deadline.
    • References must comment on the quality of the research proposal and the applicant's qualifications. One referee should certify the successful viva (defense) and final examination of the applicant’s PhD thesis.
