Where do cross-cutting discussions happen?: Identifying cross-cutting comments on YouTube videos of political vloggers and mainstream news outlets

This study examines whether social media fosters echo chambers or cross-cutting discussions by analyzing political vloggers' comment threads and comparing them with mainstream news outlet videos. Using manual content analysis for vlogger comments and NLP classifiers (logistic regression, SVM, random forest) for news comments, the study finds cross-cutting discussion proportions vary by channel political leaning and media type, and suggests neutral news outlets may serve as venues for cross-cutting dialogue.
