Abstract
This paper investigates the interdisciplinary nature of robotics research and its political implications. Using a mixed-methods approach combining bibliometrics, desk-based analysis, and fieldwork at the Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL), the study explores how robotics is co-produced within research institutions and with wider society. The authors analyze the disciplines involved, the logics guiding research, and the capabilities needed for effective interdisciplinary work. The findings reveal a plurality of interdisciplinary approaches, highlighting the influence of funders, researchers, industry partners, and end-users in shaping research directions and raising concerns about power dynamics and the representation of societal interests.
