This paper investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household energy use in rural North India. Using high-frequency phone surveys in Jharkhand and Bihar, the study reveals that a significant portion of households experienced economic hardships, leading some to rely more on polluting fuels. Despite a preference for gas and electricity, access and cost remained barriers. The study highlights the success of India's three-free-cylinders scheme and emphasizes the utility of high-frequency surveys for capturing nuanced changes in energy consumption patterns.
